I might have been skewed since I was actually in Hall H for Sony's D9 panel (didn't get into the screening at the Gaslamp)
But the "woah" reaction to the footage they showed was at least in the Top 6 reactions I've ever seen there and that includes the first time Iron Man was shown, the first time 300 footage was shown (which was the first time, the now cliche "play the trailer again" thing started), the 'surprise" announcement of TRON LEGACY, etc.
Also touched off a bunch of random social media chatter at the time like (when she was a big deal during American Idol) Jordan Sparks wanting to see it based on reactions there.
Obviously a very different time then to now, when there were only midnights, but there's nothing else I can point towards being explainable as to why it worked with a no name cast, no name director, etc and a cryptic marketing campaign.
