The movies I'm looking at are Watchmen and Avatar

Avatar, even with all the promotion, only made $77M opening weekend. It went on to make a lot more, but it was still an unproven film, not a sequel, with tons of publicity, and it still maxed out at $77M, so I think that's the limit for something like INCPT.

Watchmen was considered a disappointment at $55M. Not bad, but people were estimating a lot higher. It has a similar running time (I think it's maybe 20 minutes longer than INCPT), fanboy interest, complex storyline, visually interesting.

I think the presence of DiCaprio, plus the summer release, keeps INCPT from bottoming out at the Watchmen price, so my approach has been that somewhere between 60-75 is what we're looking at.

Is the original Mission Impossible a good movie to compare INCPT to? M.I did 45 OW in 3K theaters...what do you think? bennyboy10 Jul 13, 08:17

Mission Impossible had a builtin fanbase from the TV series. Whereas Inception is a net new offering. {nm} horlicks Jul 13, 08:19

the TV series that began in 1966??? that fan base? {nm} ndmaster Jul 13, 08:22

It had brand recognition. Everyone knew what Mission: Impossible was, even if they'd never seen an episode. {nm} RogerMore Jul 13, 08:25

I didn't know there was a TV series until today. {nm} extepan Jul 13, 09:01

The second series ran for two seasons from 88 to 90. 6 years before the movie was released. {nm} horlicks Jul 13, 08:54

I wonder if The Matrix is a better comparison - more recent, similar themes about reality, looks cool but people don't know what it's really RogerMore Jul 13, 08:26

I'm thinking a little bit about Watchmen, for some reason.. Facto Jul 13, 08:48

Nah, don't think so, but what about A.I? A more intellectual movie that can be compared to INCPT I think. How was the anticipation to that? {nm} Skauge Jul 13, 08:38

imho I wouldn't call MI a mind****...confusing for some, maybe...lol {nm} tealfan Jul 13, 08:40

I know!!! Why don't we just wait until INCPT opens and then we can compare all future movies to IT! {nm} secretstalker Jul 13, 08:46

I believe that Avatar seemed much more, eh, "available" to the general audience. I think the premise to INCPT will turn some people off... Skauge Jul 13, 09:07

In my post I say it won't do as well as Avatar - I'm using that film to guess what INCPT's upper range might be ChrisEW Jul 13, 11:04

BTW, Inception is PG-13 too and I do know some parents who are taking their kids (in the 11-13 range) secretstalker Jul 13, 09:17

IS IT REALLY! Oh man, the PG-13 rating changes everything IMO...seriously, never would have caught that {nm} bennyboy10 Jul 13, 09:40
