MISS8 spoiler question...

A question about the climax.  Ethan was about to insert the poison pill into the podkova, but then stopped and jumped out of the plane first.  Then he inserted it into the podkova - cutting it way close.  Why did he do that?  McQuarrie wasn't just trying to create more suspense for no reason was he?
