Its v interesting that they're remaking this now, considering the original tells a story of a barbaric ruler hiding in his castle with other rich folk to avoid the plague killing the general public outside. Justice comes in macabre ways.
Interesting because I was re-reading parts of a book by Rushkoff (Survival of the Richest) from 2-3 years back this week about how nearly EVERY billionaire in the world has built a secret bunker preparing for end of the world scenarios (& many multi-millionaires were prepping/trying/in process of building one) that they're v well aware they have a major hand in causing (caused by economic disparity, social unrest, political upheavals, climate change etc). Their focus is on keeping the hoards out & lasting out the apocalypse. In reality we're closer than we should be to such cataclysms all of a sudden (world's supposed to run out of crude oil by ~2070, few other resources b/w 2060-2100 by current consumption rate) thanks to autocratic (both) politicians & tech-preneurs/biz leaders.
SPOILER ALERT (not quite - but if you really wish to know nothing - skip the next para):
Am really hoping this gets explored as Madison plays a young princess trying to protect herself & her daughter from both the people inside as well as the plague/equivalent outside (& that she's the one delivering justice here). Sweeney would not have been able to do justice to this meaty role so am really happy this change of casting happened.
There was a Guardian article ~18 months back - basically an extract from the book (the comments below were 'lit' too - great reading):
