When has any director/star admitted a movie/franchise they're emotionally attached to is 'dead'?

Its always, "there's 'x' hurdle but we'll do it eventually".
Less than 10% admit the truth & that too only when they get another project to move on to.
And something like < 10-15% of the claimed 'not dead' projects (if that) ever get finished + a release.
EWRIG/SSPIE/JCAME/CFUKU/MSCOR & NBLON amongst many others collect (& announce) projects like people collect stamps/books.
These are ideas that fire their imagination & keep them (& their+project's fanbases) going. Meanwhile they make stuff that producers put money into.
