I'll be interested to see how Practical Magic 2 plays. the best comp I can find this year is Wuthering Heights, which also had a 76% female
audience and a built in fanbase.
You could say Prada2, but I feel that is quite a bit of a different crowd, and the attendance over the weekend is nowhere near the same.
So, back to Wuthering which opened to $32.8M. It had $3M in previews and made $10.8M on Friday ($7.8M).
PM2 had $4.7M in previews and made $13.1M on Friday ($8.4M).
both films were similar on RT, not identical, but similar. critics hated them, audience enjoyed.
Here is where it gets interesting, on Sat PM2 made $9.85M vs $14M for WH.
Then on Sun it was $7M vs $8M.
Wuthering had a 2.4x multiplier, but that was with a huge bump on Saturday, which didn't get at all.
True Fri for WH was 79% vs 17% for PM2.
I think PM2 will trend somewhere between 2.2x to 2.3x. If I had to call it this early, I actually would peg it lower, around $65M by delist.
I could be way wrong here, and we'll know more this week, but this is a really tough one to hit on the mark.
It's only shot to trend higher than 2.3-2.4x is repeat business from the fans, because this isn't a film you can convince people to go see that don't know the IP.
anyway, it will be fun to watch as you don't see what I think this film is going to do very often.
