Sofia Coppola’s “Somewhere,” about a hard-living Hollywood actor who receives a surprise visit from his 11-year-old daughter, won the top award at the Venice Film Festival, which ended today.
The jury at this year’s 10-day festival was led by U.S. filmmaker Quentin Tarantino, who said the choice of Coppola, like the jury’s other decisions, was unanimous.
“This was a film that enchanted us from our first screening,” said Tarantino, in a tuxedo and dark glasses, at the gala ceremony. “Yet from that first enchanting screening, it grew and grew and grew in both our hearts, in our analysis, in our minds, and in our affections.”
Coppola, who wore a puffy silk dress, said she was “so proud to have a Golden Lion,” as the Venice prize is known.
“My parents are watching in Napa,” she said, referring to filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola and his wife. “Thanks to my Dad for teaching me.”
