I feel quite sure that your friends would not be pleased with paying to see the full feature...
But don't get me wrong - I liked it. I'm into that kind of meandering, atmospheric meditations on nothingsness, though - especially if they are set in legendary L.A. places (I have a weak spot for that city, having had a sojourn there).
But again, the reviewer with Time Magazine pretty much hit the nail on the head. I'm not sure what competition it was up against in Venice, but I can see that for cineasts, this flick resonnated in ways that it hardly will with any general audience - which wants illusions, and bread and circus, not (to them) boring and pointless truth and authenticity. (But the point of the pointlessness of the plot is to reflect the pointlessness the focal character feels with his existence - and also, again, keyword "vacuous".)
