This is a good film, actually (Slight spoilers inside)
Not at all what you're expecting. First off, it's like 2 hours and 45 minutes long. You spend almost an hour with Butler as a total son of a ****. And then you see him transform, slowly. Parts of this movie are like a hardcore grunge fest while other parts literally feel like they were made by evangelical christians. And then, in the end, the film keeps integrity by questioning the legitimacy of the protagonists increasingly pseudo-fascist leanings.
If nothing else, it is maybe the only film I've ever seen that really deals with child soldiers. Butler murders a child in one scene and then we get several long shots of the corpse. It's harsh, man.
The cut was still rough and overlong, but it had a kind of Casino or Goodfellas scope to it, though it certainly is not anywhere near that level.
