The future of Hollywood: Fading power of stars?

I just wanted to see what everyone thinks about the direction that the U.S. box office is headed in. Although there's no viable 'proof', but it seems like the days stars opening top movies are long gone. Most profitable box office films nowadays are saturated with special effects, or are part of a trilogy/sequal/comic book/novel. Is the box office power of movie stars fading? What do audiences now consider when they watch films?

It would also be great to discuss the negative impacts on box offfice revenue, if any, off stars' personal lives. Tom Cruise being the prime example-- his films are no longer bankable, post couch-jumping, scientology spewing incidents. Did his off screen behaviour really impact the box office revenue of his films? I mean if that's the case, then why do actors like Mel Gibson and Robert Downey Jr. continue to make the big bucks at the box office?
