I think you have to be patient with Egypt and the other Arab Spring countries.

Posted by: RogerMore on Oct 29, 13:03 in response to edzep - Port Monkey!'s post True. But, who elected the leadership?

The Egyptians were wary of electing another Mubarak, who would have the deep state of the army and the intelligence services behind him.  And thankfully they didn't want to elect the Salafists either.

I'm not saying the Muslim Brotherhood is great, but having a stake in Egypt's future should give them a dose of reality that they didn't have as an underground movement.  Some of their ideologies will prove to not be practical, if they want to prosper they'll have to engage constructively with the outside world, and so on.

So hopefully over the next decade Egypt etc will move towards a similar level of democracy as there is in Turkey or Indonesia.  They're not going to become a liberal democracy overnight, but it took the United States nearly a century to get rid of slaves, and nearly 150 years to extend the vote to women.

What is a Christian Fundamentalist? websch01ar Oct 29, 05:02

Jerry Falwell & Pat Robertson are two examples. Link attached. RotoHockeyYTD2012 Oct 29, 05:41

I am sure you know this already, but someone who follows a literal reading of the Bible. (So, for example, someone who believes Roger More Oct 29, 05:55

I am a Southern Baptist and we believe the Bible to be the inherent Word of God. So I qualify? {nm} websch01ar Oct 29, 06:08

I don't know. Do some research into fundamentalism and figure out how closely they align with your beliefs, I guess. Roger More Oct 29, 06:27

fundamentalism as defined by packer varies greatly from fundamentalism as defined by robertson. {nm} forlorne Oct 29, 06:35

I could care less about Robertson and Falwell. But ppl here should know that websch01ar Oct 29, 07:23

Let's not forget that this whole discussion originated from labelling and poorly constructed argument. Roger More Oct 29, 07:57

I've not been intolerant. websch01ar Oct 29, 08:07

I'm seeing a lot of "don't label us" and not a lot of "don't label them". You haven't said anything intolerant (and neither has forlorne) Roger More Oct 29, 08:30

think of it terms of a spectrum of beliefs. Fundamentalism can be defined as those who believe in one extreme side of the spectrum Moviesnob Oct 29, 12:10

I hear ya, but some use the term as a slur. That is the part I take issue with. websch01ar Oct 29, 12:57

why is belief in a specific set of facts "extreme"? {nm} forlorne Oct 29, 14:06

something has to be. on a scale of 1-10, the two extremes are 1 and 10. There's no connotation to the word "extreme" in this context {nm} Moviesnob Oct 29, 14:44

Roger, as re: below, i can seperate what people do and an actual belief system, my point was this was the president forlorne Oct 29, 06:33

I only posted that once! {nm} forlorne Oct 29, 06:34

I saw in an earlier discussion, you were able to differentiate your own faith from the Crusades and the Spanish Inquisition. Why don't you Roger More Oct 29, 06:39

I do. That's not my point, it is that this currently appears to currently be mainstream practice in much of the world i.e. forlorne Oct 29, 07:21

Bad people doing bad things. And just like the Crusades, the situation in Egypt is also more complex than many realise. Roger More Oct 29, 07:33

The president is from the Muslim Brotherhood. They represent one party, not the whole Egypt, and certainly not the whole Muslim world. {nm} Antibody Oct 29, 10:08

The president of a country does not represent a country? {nm} forlorne Oct 29, 11:45

Country, not religion. Reagan called USSR an Evil Empire. GW called Iran, Iraq and North Korea 'Axis of Evil'. {nm} Antibody Oct 29, 11:46

are you really equating calling north korea evil with publicly praying for the destruction of all jews? {nm} forlorne Oct 29, 14:10

Morsi didn't say it. Many Arabs are against the creation of Israel in Palenstine and Egypt has lost wars to Israel. Antibody Oct 29, 14:20

There are moderates and secularists in Egypt who don't agree with the Muslim Brotherhood ledership. {nm} Antibody Oct 29, 11:49

True. But, who elected the leadership? {nm} edzep - Port Monkey! Oct 29, 12:40

egypt is trying to move to democracy, lets give them the benefit of the doubt for now it wont be a dictarship Moviesnob Oct 29, 12:44

Does President Obama represent all your views? {nm} Antibody Oct 29, 13:00

Again missing the point. If our president publicly prayed for the destruction of all muslims, i and the entire world would be screaming. forlorne Oct 29, 14:05

I'm not making excuses. It is bad, but the point is it does not represent all Muslims. {nm} Antibody Oct 29, 14:31

i disagree with the "literal reading" definition, what does a literal reading mean? there are many portions that are forlorne Oct 29, 06:30

I can see your point here. {nm} Roger More Oct 29, 06:43

could someone here just say it is really bad for the president of egypt to do that, instead of making excuses and obfuscations? forlorne Oct 29, 14:08

You mean like I did here, yesterday? RogerMore Oct 29, 14:25
