I like that Charlie also gives the flip side to the arguement. It is a very, very, very tough industry that is hard to break into...
but if it kis a passion, why not try. The only thing that you have to give up is your time that you invest in it.
I left a career where I'd currently be making far more money. I sold my house where the house payment was less money per month (including taxes and insurance) than what I pay for rent in a guest house here in West Hollywood.
But I don't care about the money or the fact that I may never own a home once again. I love what I do. I love being able to talk and work on stories and get paid for it... enough to survive at the moment. No day or project is ever the same and I've met some crazy and talented people in my years here. I no longer work to live, I live to work... no matter how cliched that sounds. Hell, what I do I barely consider calling work. I love what I do and I work towards my goals every single day. Whether it is learning something new, reading good and bad scripts... and as someone else said. Writing EVERY DAY.
It is tough. I too have been writing for almost seven years, with a couple years in the middle where I stopped for a while when the development life zapped my own creative pursuits. It's finding the right balance between the personal life, the workign life and the passion that you have.
So I say go for it... but do know it is a tough road. Australia has it's own differences in its marketplace and how things are done, just like the other poster who mentioned they are in the UK. I have a couple people I've met online and in person that are in Australia... not sure what area you're in compared to them, but I know I could make the connection if you email me.
If you do decide to pursue it... good luck and enjoy the journey.
