unless (1) you have actual talent for writing and storytelling; and (2) you're willing to work a long time at developing that talent into genuine craft. i've been writing steadily for seven years and only now feel like i'm even beginning to get close to being good enough to get paid for it (top 10% at Austin FF the past three years with my specs and pilots). even leaving aside all of the challenges on the business side of getting repped, or produced, actually writing a script that is good enough to get you repped or produced is just really. ****ing. hard.

most people don't want to hear that they don't have the talent to do it, but most people don't. just like most people don't have the talent to be an NBA, MLB, NHL, or NFL professional athlete. that's okay, most people can still play basketball, baseball, hockey, or football for fun and get enjoyment. but to be a professional, working writer in the industry means competing against the top 1% (maybe even the 0.1%) of other writers with both the talent and the work ethic to get studios to pay them a **** ton of money to do the job.
