I'm surprised that The Shield reference was the first you had heard. Vic Mackey's character developement has been universally
acknowledged as being one of the best in television history. Certainly more so than Malter White. Yes, BC has won the Emmy 3 times compared to Vic Mackey's 1, but Chickles was going against much stiffer competition. It was Vic or Tony Soprano for several years and both were always deserving. Breaking bad has had the advantage of going against nobody in Emmy consideration (with the exception of the 1st and only the first season of Homeland.
I rewatched, so far, the first 2 seasons of BB and am not having even the slightest reluctance saying that the character developement in BB doesn't shine a light on what was going on in The Shiled or The Wire.
