has "lost control" of their vehicle and run over a bunch of people, I remember there being calls for more restriction/regulation/testing for elderly and impaired people as far as allowing them to have driving licenses.

Also, while there are (I think) comparable numbers of guns as there are cars in use in the US, there are MANY more times people using cars than thare are people using guns, on a daily basis. So, yes, there are many more vehicular fatalities and injuries than there are gun fatalities and injuries, but the number of people driving necessarily makes it so. So that's a poor argument to make.

I just don't like the car license/control comparison for gun license/control, if you're on the pro-gun side.Ā  If you bring up "well look at all the car deaths and no one is calling for a ban on cars", you lose because in order to legally drive a car, you have to go through driver's ed, take a written and practical test, be at least 15 years for a permit and 16 for a license, renew your license every few years, and be in a database.

Also, cars themselves must be registered, and there are lots of laws restricting how they can be used, where they can be used, and who can use them. The manufacture and sales of them are regulated- if family members exchange cars, or if a car is bought outside of a car dealer, the title must still go through the state DMV. Manufacturer recalls happen all the time when something is found that can make the vehicles more dangerous than they should be.

And finally, in order to drive a car (legally), the vehicle and driver must be insured. And these rules apply across all 50 states. So, really, if you want to be as regulated and restricted as cars are, you've lost that fight.

Is it time to discuss gun control?? {nm} Buy BONDS 21 Oct 03, 15:39

I think you'll find that a car was the weapon; where are the calls for car control? {nm} edzep - Port Monkey! Oct 03, 15:44

Already have it. Driving is a privilege, not a right and licensed in all states. Big difference. {nm} BSmurf Oct 03, 16:00

All of the licensing and control, and yet, millions of people a year are killed with cars. It would seem that we need MORE car control. edzep - Port Monkey! Oct 03, 16:08

[millions, probably erroneous; you get the point] {nm} edzep - Port Monkey! Oct 03, 16:09

cars have a utility independent of the risk. the only purpose of a gun is to kill or cause grievous bodily harm {nm} charlie Oct 03, 16:10

I can't argue with you. You have your red herring, and are happy with it. {nm} edzep - Port Monkey! Oct 03, 16:19

cars aren't used for anything but killing? what else can you use a gun for?? {nm} charlie Oct 03, 16:46

Gun collecting, like car collecting- although I imagine both are small subsets of overall ownership. Also, sport. Shooting clay pigeons Paul2k Oct 03, 17:11

Clearly we need background checks and a 5 day waiting period before anyone buys a car. {nm} Bubba_Fett Oct 03, 17:34

Can't we agree that responsible gun ownership with sensible regulation (of the gun owner, the gun itself, and the sale/manufacture of guns) Paul2k Oct 03, 17:16

Absolutely, as on outsider though it seems that the vocal groups are against any kind of regulation srrichardson Oct 04, 03:35

Your last sentence buys into the fiction that the anti-gun agenda has set up. edzep - Port Monkey! Oct 04, 13:38

More like, his experience of living in the UK has shown him that strict gun laws leads to fewer gun deaths and fewer crimes involving guns. {nm} RogerMore Oct 04, 14:10

That depends...is gun ownership the cause of this incident or can it be related to some socio-economical-mental-personal factor. - or both? {nm} PVL Admin Oct 03, 17:51
