Wayward Pines was filmed and completed some time ago. Fox left it sitting on the proverbial shelf for at least a year. Rumor is that the only reason it aired at all was because of the huge success of Empire. Apparently the execs felt that because Terrence Howard was in both, Wayward Pines had a chance of making money too.
Fox had announced back in July that there would not be a second season but there's been recent news that M. Night Shyamalan is in talks with the books' author about a possible season two.
Personally, I'm glad they didn't drag out the story to keep the big reveal a secret. That almost always leads to bad story-telling IMO. It was the big problem with Lost for me. The writers had to keep making more stuff up to fill more episodes and by the time they got to the point where they knew the show was going to end, they couldn't write an ending that didn't leave huge amounts of the filler they'd pulled from their posteriors hanging, unresolved or just flat out contradicted. (Of course, it didn't help that the executive producers admitted afterwards that they didn't have a clue where they were going with any of it in the first place.)
