Couple reasons...
You've got staunch people who hate the political establishment and just want to have chaos.
You've got naive or gullible folks (I call lemmings) who believe what he says even though he has no political soul (I had read he had changed political affiliations 5 times over the past 20 years, he last was a Dem a few years ago). When he says something outlandish like building the wall and making Mexico pay for it, they merely nod their heads. And when he outright lies, they don't care.
There were too many people running, at one time 10+, with Bush gone it's down to 5 but for someone like Rubio (who IMO is the only one I find acceptable), he needs Bush's and Kasich's voters and it migbt be too late.
It's not very different on the other side, Bernie Sanders is a Democratic Socialist whose voters have similar values and hate Hillary.
