The Mandalorian is kind of the "family friendly" Firefly in a very loose sense but it would seem safer just to yet another spin-off of that

The Whedon brand is pretty toxic at this point so I can see why they would want to do something that in a million years he would never want to do (that and the Firefly movie was more of a wrapping up of loose ends vs something to springboard future continuation)
