Aaliyah makes her film debut in Romeo Must Die in which she falls in love with martial arts superstar Jet Li and causes a race and gangland war to erupt. Aaliyah came out of Detroit to lead the so-called New Jill Swing music movement. Her early career was nurtured by R. Kelly while she was still a star student at Detroit's High School of the Performing Arts. The two musical stars have since married.
In Romeo Must Die, Aaliyah stars opposite Jet Li, Isaiah Washington and Delroy Lindo in the action film about vicious rivalries and violent betrayals in New York's underworld. In 1998, Aaliyah performed "Journey to the Past" from the film Anastasia and became one of the youngest singers in Oscar history to perform a nominated Best Song.
