Based on the book of the same name by Cormac McCarthy, Matt Damon stars as a young Texas man named John Grady Cole who crosses the border into Mexico with his best friend in search of the cowboy life. Left without commitments in the states, he suddenly finds himself embarking on an unexpected adventure -- a new job, a doomed romance with the beautiful daughter of a wealthy ranch owner, a murder in self-defense and serving jail time south of the border. His real life travails provide him with the ultimate test of manhood and the strength to persevere.
This is the second full-length film directed by Billy Bob Thorton who also directed Sling Blade. The 1995 film earned Thornton the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay. In 1992, McCarthy won both the National Book Award for Fiction and the National Critics Circle Book Award. Henry Thomas, Lucas Black, Ruben Blades, Robert Patrick, Bruce Dern, Sam Shepard, and Penelope Cruz join Damon in the cast.
