Fear, love, and chaos underlie the dramatic events portrayed in The Dancer Upstairs, a film directed by John Malkovich. The romantic thriller stars Oscar-nominated actor Javier Bardem of Before Night Falls. The story concerns the search for Abimael Guzman, founder of the Peruvian guerrilla force the Shining Path. Bardem plays Agustin Rejas, the police officer involved in the manhunt.
The film is based on a book written by Nicholas Shakespeare who also makes his screenwriting debut. The Dancer Upstairs is produced by Andres Vicente Gomez for LolaFilms Productions. Other actors include Juan Diego Botto, Laura Morante, Elvira Minguez, and Abel Folk.
