Master and Commander is set during the Napoleonic Wars and follows the adventures of the HMS Surprise. Captain Jack Aubrey and his crew battle the French and the Spanish on the high seas. The story captures the culture of the British Navy during the 19th century through the actions of Aubrey and his friend, surgeon Stephen Maturin. Russell Crowe stars as Aubrey while Paul Bettany plays Maturin.
The adventure film is based on the 10th novel in the nautical series written by Patrick O'Brian. Peter Weir (The Truman Show) directs the adaptation written by Larry Ferguson (Maximum Risk).
