New Zealand-born Russell Crowe starred in a number of noteworthy Australian films before making his jump to the United States in the 1995 western The Quick and the Dead. Crowe twice received honors from the Australian Film Institute, first for his supporting turn in 1992's Proof, then for his controversial lead role in 1993's Romper Stomper. Crowe wowed the critics in 1997's L.A. Confidential and earned an Oscar nomination for The Insider. 2000's Gladiator established Crowe as a box-office draw and an A-list actor in Hollywood.
