One of the best-known drag queens in the world, RuPaul has become a success in nearly every realm of the entertainment industry. The star is the morning drive-time host for the top-rated, New York radio station WKTU. In summer 2000, he will be seen on the big screen (as the male character named Mike) in But I’m a Cheerleader. The comedy centers on a teenager sent to a rehab camp after her parent suspects she may be a lesbian.
RuPaul grew up in an all female household in San Diego. As a teenager, he worked at a used car dealership in Atlanta. He next journeyed as a young man to Manhattan, where he became a star of the Manhattan nightlife.
The socialite has become a superstar after reaching the top of the charts as a recording artist. The multitalented RuPaul is also known as an actor, author (Lettin’ It All Hang Out), and even cosmetics spokesperson for M.A.C. cosmetics. He is also the co-chairman of the M.A.C. AIDS fund.
In 1997, RuPaul released his critically acclaimed album Foxy Lady. Later that year, he hosted his self-titled television talk show The RuPaul Show on VH1.
For the documentary The Eyes of Tammy Faye, a summer 2000 release, RuPaul serves as the narrator for an interesting portrait of the once-mighty preacher's wife.
