Startup.com chronicles the success of Internet company GovWorks.com, a site that provides services for the government as well as private businesses. Childhood friends founded the company, and the docu-drama shows the success of an Internet company at a personal level. After quitting their jobs, the friends laid the groundwork for their new site.
Jehane Noujaim makes his directorial debut with Startup.com. D.A. Pennebaker and Chris Hegedus, creators of the film, formerly worked on 1993s docu-drama The War Room, which focused on Bill Clintons 1992 election campaign. The filmmakers wanted to release this type of project in a time where the expectations and stakes are very high for Internet companies. Artisan is distributing the film.
