Directed by Deepa Mehta, the musical drama Water is set during India's struggle for independence in the 1930s. The film details the plight of a group of widows forced into poverty in the holy city of Varanasi. One of the widows works to escape the confines of her social status and starts a relationship with a man from a lower caste who is a follower of Gandhi. Lisa Ray, Jon Abraham, Waheeda Rehman and Seema Biswas star in the film which kicked off the 2005 Toronto International Film Festival. Water is the third film of a dramatic trilogy.
