As Hollywood prepares for the annual Academy Awards on Sunday, four new releases hope to catch the attention of moviegoers. Good Deeds [GDEED] is the latest original drama from filmmaker Tyler Perry [TPERR]. His reliable fanbase of older black women will turn out like clockwork even without the benefit of the Madea character. Opening in 2132 theaters, Good Deeds may translate into about $19 million and first place at the weekend box office.
Real life, active Navy Seals are the star of the fictional actioner Act of Valor [AOVAL]. Relativity snapped up the completed film in the aftermath of the Seals raid that killed Osama Bin Laden. The R-rated film plays like a first-person shooter videogame which will appeal to the male demographic. Diving into 3039 theaters, Act of Valor may score around $17 million.
After enjoying a holiday bump in their second weekend, Safe House [SAFEH], Journey 2: The Mysterious Island [MYSTR] and The Vow [THVOW] could all drop down between $13 million and $12 million.
Jennifer Aniston [JANIS] and Paul Rudd [PRUDD] team up for the R-rated comedy Wanderlust [WLUST]. The Judd Apatow produced film has received good reviews, which should help with its target audience of older couples. Playing in just 2001 locations, Wanderlust may settle with $11 million.
After finding success in romance, Amanda Seyfried [ASEYF] tries a different genre with Gone [GONE]. Summit’s marketing has not made the PG-13 rated thriller look any better than the average TV movie. Witrh the appeal limited to young women, Gone could earn just $5.5 million from 2186 theaters.
