Gary Ross is in talks to write and direct Venom.

Due to Venom's popularity with comic fans, the villain found it's way into Spider-Man 3 over director Sam Raimi's [SRAIM] desires.  As a result, Spider-Man 3 became bloated with 3 villains and Venom was short-changed in its shoe-horned appearance.  Sony will now give the character its proper due with the spin-off movie Venom [VENM1] to be written and possibly directed by Gary Ross [GAROS], currently rewriting Spider-Man 4 [SPID4].  Topher Grace, who played the character Eddie Brock that turned into Venom in Spider-Man 3, is not likely to return.  Instead, the alien symbiote will find a new host to manifest its powers.  With Venom set to be an anti-hero in its own movie, could fellow alien symbiote Carnage make its appearance as the villain?
