Closing out the action trilogy with just a little drop-off, Taken 3 [TAKE3] earned an estimated $40.4 million to top the weekend box office. The opening is the second best ever for January behind only Ride Along's $44.5 million. The audience broke down 64% male and 54% over the age of 25.
Selma [SELMA] finished second in its wide expansion with $11.2 million. The historical drama attracted a crowd that was 61% female and 83% was over the age of 25.
Into the Woods [INTWD] grossed $9.7 million to take third place. The musical has banked $105.3 million.
The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies [HOBT3] took in another $9.4 million to bring its total to $136.5 million.
Unbroken [UBRKN] rounded out the top five with $8.4 million to cross the century mark at $101.6 million.
