Sequelitis finally caught up to the 2019 box office as two franchises suffer massive fatigue this weekend. Although The Secret Life of Pets 2 [PETS2] topped the weekend with an estimated $47.1 million, the debut is less than half of the 2016 original's $104.3 million. The animated film drew 62% female and 53% under 25, with families making up 62% of the audience.
Dark Phoenix [XMEN7] opened in second place with $33.0 million, the lowest in the X-Men series which had been all above $50 million. The audience was 57% male with 61% aged 25 or older.
Aladdin [ALADN] finished third at $24.5 million, bringing its total to $232.4 million after 3 weekends.
last week's champ Godzilla: King of the Monsters [GODZ2] tumbled 67% to $15.5 million and fourth place. The haul stands at $78.6 million.
Rocketman [RCKTM] was fifth with $14.0 million, down 46% from its debut. The biopic has sung $50.5 million.
Ma [MA] dropped 57% to $7.8 million and sixth in its second weekend, bringing its total to $32.8 million.
