Sony continues its recent winning streak as its animated sequel  Hotel Transylvania 2 [HTRN2] booked an estimated $47.5 million to set a new opening weekend record for September.  The first film held the previous record of $42.5 milion.  The family film brought out an audience that was 59% female and 60% under 25.

The Intern [INTRN] debuted in second place with $18.2 million.  The audience for the workplace comedy skewed 89% over 25.

A couple of directors return after a long hiatus, but they will be no match for the animated monsters of Hotel Transylvania 2 [HTRN2]. The first Hotel Transylvania set the September opening weekend record in 2012 with $42.5 million. Adam Sandler [ASAND], Selena Gomez [SGOME] and Andy Samberg [ASAMB] reprise their roles in the PG-rated sequel from Sony. Sony Pictures Classics has unveiled the trailer for the drama Truth [TRUTD] based on recent current events.  Robert Redford [RREDF] stars as CBS anchor Dan Rather and Cate Blanchett [CBLAN] as producer Mary Mapes as they reported that President George W. Two new entrants into the weekend box office race both came in slower than expected.  Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials [MAZE2] finished first with an estimated $30.3 million, short of the $32.5 million opening of the first The Mazde Runner exactly a year ago.   The YA sci-fi sequel found an audience that was 53% female and 65% under the age of 25.

Focus Features has revealed the first trailer for the Biblical drama The Young Messiah [CHRST] based on the Anne Rice novel, Chirst the Lord: Out of Egypt.   The film is told from the childhood perspective of Jesus at age seven as he and his family depart Egypt to return home to Nazareth.
