Not even The Hobbit was immuned to holiday shopping and other festivities as An Unexpected Journey [HOBIT] tumbled an unexpectedly 57% to $36.7 million in its second weekend.  That was still enough to lead the box office against the five new arrivals.  Part one of the fantasy adventure has totaled $149.9 million.

Jack Reacher [1SHOT] opened in second place with an estimated $15.6 million.  The Tom Cruise action vehicle will need good word of mouth to expand its audience outside older guys.

Despite setting a new opening weekend record for December, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey [HOBIT] faces an uncertain holiday season. Reviews are not as good as The Lord of the Rings trilogy, while the HFR version has been divisive amongst audiences. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King decreased 30% in its second weekend, but that came after Christmas.
