After three weeks of lackluster new releases,  the thriller Contagion [CONTG] finally broke out and grossed an estimated $23.1 million to knock off The Help from the top spot.   An all-star ensemble cast help the viral pandemic film drew an audience that was 80% over the age of 25.

The Help still finished second with a robust $8.7 million.   The drama has banked $137.1 million in five weeks.

Focus Features has released the domestic trailer for the spy thriller Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy [TTSS] based on the novel by John Le Carre.  An intelligence officer is recalled from retirement when there are signs that one of the top-ranking officers of the British Secret Intelligence Service is a Soviet mole.  Originally set to open wide in October, Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy now opens limited on December 9th in order to build up buzz for year-end accolades.

Adult moviegoers drove the Labor Day weekend box office as the drama The Help [THELP] finished first for a third straight time and the thriller The Debt [TDEBT] debuted in second place.  The Help swept up an estimated $19.0 million over the four day weekend to bring its total to $123.4 million.

The summer movie season comes to an end as three new films open over the long Labor Day weekend. The sci-fi horror Apollo 18 [APO18] appears to have to best chance to break out. The Weinstein Co. film is the latest entry in the “lost footage” sub-genre of horror popularized by Paranormal Activity and purports to show what happened to the astronauts of a secret last mission to the moon.
