Well, as a beginner I can say a sure thing is usually wait until Friday, and the estimates start coming in.
Once enough momemtum builds up, you almost always know whether to go long or short. Of course you won't make as much money as someone who makes the stand earlier in the weak, but that the nature of the market. More risk higher gain, lower risk lower gain. Just make sure your gains will be higher than commissions.

What finally got me over the hump of being cash poor was HPOT8. Reshorted, sold off slow movers to raise enough to Jun 05, 09:38
