Sure, look at a movie like Bruno it was easy to take the profits from the short and then reshort from all the bad numbers.
Since the days of commish free are over it can be a little tricky. Follow news about movies on other sites and use your method if you want to bank profits and get the gut feeling that a movie will collapse over the next few weeks. Imdb will show largest dips, I feel real strong about my short on 2012 and on commish free Sat (they are over) I would short then cover until it leveled off, now I will just sit on the short until about 110M. Good Question.
