I think higher res can help, but, it depends on your viewing distance, and eyesight (ability to use small fonts).

I do have a dual monitor setup I use for more serious work... a 1920x1080 monitor hooked to my laptop. I can view two applications side-by-side, full height, and, as you note, keep my extra HSX windows on the lappy screen. Not sure about Apple resolution.
