I have to wonder if the Mother's Day dynamic is being considered enough. The only movie to open Mother's Day weekend with any gusto was
Star Trek and well, that was plugged really, really well...fan boys live with their moms or something maybe. ;-) Typically, this is the second weekend of May...and looking at the cemetary that is the openers of Mother's Day weekend...Star Trek at 70 some odd million is the top grosser. Everything else is 50m or less, I think. 3-D will help with overall gross but the predictions in the 70's are a bit too high I think. Also, this feels like a Hulk type of opening...I wouldn't be shocked to see 55m or similar...the 3-D is maybe what boosts it to 60m but again with the Mother's Day Sunday kicking the gross down. Strong movies like Iron Man and Star Trek saw smaller losses on Mother's Day than weaker counterpaarts. The question will be can Thor prove it isn't a weaker cousin to Iron Man. I am thinking it is. Hope I am proved wrong but I am leaning away from this being an atypical opener. Just my humble opinion and all that...
