MS, what's the best-selling DTV genre? Action films? Does horror or comedy sell well in that format?

A few years ago tons of comedies were going DTV, most of them teen sex comedies. And horror films were released almost weekly via Lionsgate or Anchor Bay. When did the downturn in the DVD market really start?

If it were about 2008, I would have fully expected AB to have acquired and released Tucker and Dale vs. Evil, a funny little movie I saw at a film festival, as it fits right in with horror comedies AB has released in the past like Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer and Night of the Living Dorks. It even stars Katrina Bowden, who was in The Shortcut, another AB horror film.  Speaking of which, why didn't AB distribute Hatchet 2 on video? I heard the sequel got made because of good disc sales on the first one yet AB had nothing to do with the admittedly far inferior sequel (which, in turn, has apparently done well enough that a third is going to be made, quality be damned).

BOM: [TBDRG] made $689k / 259 theaters , [BEAVR] $104k / 22, [LSNIT] $32k /10, Passion Play 2k / 2 theaters OlegMaxYTD May 08, 09:46

[PSNPL] That sucks for Passion Play... but the movie sucks. We'll see if either that or LSNIT report box office. {nm} secretstalker May 08, 10:01

both are digital plays. "sucks" is not an applicable description {nm} Moviesnob May 08, 10:42

It's better than An Invisible Sign... Have you seen that? secretstalker May 08, 10:45

Oh no you didn't! ;) {nm} HarryWarden May 08, 10:47

believe it or not, we passed {nm} Moviesnob May 08, 11:11

action is really the only genre we can get away with DTV....sequels/prequels to theatricals still do well at DTV, not much else does {nm} Moviesnob May 08, 11:12

this is a response to HarryWarden {nm} Moviesnob May 08, 11:13

Anyone have any thoughts as to why the DTV horror market dried up? It must have done well before; the market was flooded with them HarryWarden May 08, 11:17

its not a huge mystery - its a function of the dvd market collapsing. less shelf space, so less room for DTV. Moviesnob May 08, 12:27

So Ghost House Underground is history? What happened to Dimension Extreme? {nm} HarryWarden May 08, 15:18

I hope you weren't nice about it when you passed :) {nm} secretstalker May 08, 12:44
