This is actually the same process most Digital 3D films go through. Only very recently have some been shot natively in 3D since JCNTR.
G-FORCE is actually both, they made the decision to shoot in 3D after several scenes were already shot, so they converted those and shot the rest in 3D.
James Cameron prefers shooting natively in 3D, Tim Burton for example, never having shot a 3D film, wanted the ability to wrap the film first and then do the 3D in post.
Nightmare Before Christmas 3D was converted in a similar process.
