I think you still need stars for movies where you can't quite sell the concept of the movie in the trailer.
A movie like Spiderman didn't need big name stars to sell it because it was Spiderman. Pretty much every comic book movie since then has followed this model by not casting a big name.
Similarly AOVAL succeeded because it had a simple, sellable concept - see Navy Seals do what they do best. It didn't need stars because it had a great concept. So I agree that stars are a lot less necessary than they were.
But other movies, like Will Smith movies, are built around their stars persona. Will Smith is a superhero, or Will Smith is the last man alive. These movies need stars. "random dude is a super hero made up for this movie" is a much harder sell.
