So Who Saw What Last Week? (me - The Hunger Games: B-, Melancholia: C-)
Hunger Games: Its hard to criticize a film that makes 155M in 3 days, and I can totally understand, as a mainstream, crowd pleasing film, it getting that 'A' cinemascore. But the film is so superficial. No political or social commentary, no moral implication. And I get it: that lack of depth is what made the film so accessible and easy to like. But for understanding lots giving it A's, I can understand some giving C's as well.
Oh but big F-U to Gary Ross for the bad camera work, which made me queasy. Dont tell me shaky cam is to get inside Katniss' head. No, LG made the film for cheap and gave you a 3rd rate camera crew and thats the best they could do. actually overall film looks on cheap side.
Melancholia: Disappointing that after an intriguing start with nice visuals, music, and characters, film is about depression which becomes so depressingly tedious. Middle hour or so was an absolute pain to slog through.
