BATM3 theatre report and mini-review (no spoilers):

Posted by: accountant_4_Jesus (a.k.a ) on Jul 19, 07:49

Forum 6 Cinemas, Tamworth NSW Australia. Thursday 8PM. Went there with my dad, and got there just in time for the movie to start (I thought it was starting at 8:45 like it was advertised but they pushed it up to 8).

No snacks, not enough time lol.

Three trailers: BORN4, TAKE2 and DREDD. Loved all three trailers (and so did Dad).

The movie starts very slowly, with a lot of personal reflection from a couple of the characters. It soon gradually starts moving along at a faster pace, getting into some action sequences and advancing the story nicely. There are quite a few throwbacks to Batman Begins all the way through the movie, and there are very surprising developments in the characters of both the heroes and villains. Some you can see a mile away and others take you by surprise.

I must admit, towards the end I was basically reduced to tears because of some of the things that happened. But the third act is probably the best of the movie, and is a very grand finish to an epic trilogy. Personally I don't think it has the gravitas of The Dark Knight, and Bane isn't as menacing a villain as Heath Ledger's Joker was, but he still has a powerful, commanding screen presence every time you see him. Tom Hardy did a very good job and was very believable in the part. Anne Hathaway was great as Catwoman, and played off Christian Bale very well. The two had really great chemistry. Christopher Nolan also does a great job of leaving things open for future movies (I'm not going to say anymore, because if I do it will spoil things).

Although I don't think that it has probably the same impact as The Dark Knight, the fact still remains that this is one of the best comic book movies of all time, and leaves The Avengers begging for bread in its dust. While acknowledging that it does have its faults, if this movie does not win Best Picture, or at least get nominated, I would be fairly disappointed.

My verdict: A++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
(and hopefully a very deserved Oscar nomination for Best Picture at least, if not a win)

Really good, eh? Has a comic based movie ever been nominated or won an Academy Award? {nm} elchan Jul 19, 07:53

No, none have ever been nominated before, but this one definitely deserves to be, ala LOTR3. {nm} accountant_4_Jesus Jul 19, 07:54

Dark Knight won best supporting actor for Heath Ledger {nm} Moviesnob Jul 19, 07:54

Road to Perdition won an oscar for Cinematography, and was nominated for 5 more. {nm} GalacticPothealer Jul 19, 08:32

While that is based on a comic book (I had to look it up - had no idea that it was) BionicMoron, the one, the only Jul 19, 08:36

OK then: Dick Tracy won three oscars and was nominated for another four. {nm} GalacticPothealer Jul 19, 08:39

And the original Superman was also nominated for a couple of oscars, but didn't win. {nm} GalacticPothealer Jul 19, 08:50

"Ghost World" was nominated for best adapted screenplay, as was "American Splendor." {nm} second gary Jul 19, 08:49

They expanded the number of Best Picture nominations in direct response to The Dark Knight Zoggie Jul 19, 08:42

IMAX ? No Superman trailer? {nm} gogreenytd Jul 19, 07:55

The closest IMAX to where I live is 6 hours away in Sydney. IMAX isn't as prevalent in Australia as it is in the US. {nm} accountant_4_Jesus Jul 19, 07:57

nice buddy. glad you liked it (scratch that), loved it. thanks for the info! {nm} lobogotti Jul 19, 08:01

No worries :) Hopefully I can persuade some more people to see it and help it beat The Avengers' OW record ;) {nm} accountant_4_Jesus Jul 19, 08:09

it deserves the OW record over Avengers. it's by far a more superior film (as much as I enjoyed Avengers). {nm} lobogotti Jul 19, 08:21

I think the Bat certainly deserves the record over Avengers, but as the late Heath Ledger said darknightz Jul 19, 12:18

spoilers.... DON'T dare read this if you haven't seen the film. lobogotti Jul 19, 08:26
