JCHAN said that he would only do XPND3 if he had a large enough role.
December 17, 2012:
"Sly had invited me to be in "Expendables 2" but I was too busy filming "CZ12" and couldn't make a commitment to the film. But he did extend his invitation to the third movie, which I agreed on the condition that I will be appearing as more than just a minor role with a few scenes," said Chan.
Chan added that he had revealed to Stallone that he hoped the third installment of the franchise would run along the lines of a 'buddy-buddy' movie should Chan be starring in it, which the "Rambo" star obliged. Currently, the script is in the midst of being worked on to meet the criteria.

On May 17, 2013 JCHAN was planning a meeting with Stallone to review the script:
"[The Expendables team] did contact me, but right now I have not read the script yet," says Chan. "I’d love to work with Stallone, but until I get back next week and meet Stallone and his manager, see the script… that’s when he’ll tell me what happens."
"I’d most like to have a fight scene with Stallone. Though I’d like to team up with him against the bad guy. There are so many action stars involved, it must be so difficult being the director. How do you share out every scene? 'I want to do something special, I want to do something special!' At the end, it’s all small parts, small parts, small parts. I want a big part! I hope I have a big part with Stallone!"

On June 20, 2013 Jackie Chan was still waiting for a script:
"The actor, who is also ready with his new flick Chinese Zodiac which he directs as well as stars in, also said he was waiting for the script of The Expendables 3, the third installation of the hit films featuring an ensemble cast of senior action stars including Sylvester Stallone, Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger. "Will ask Stallone if I am in or out," Mr Chan said."
