your "straight out of" part.

The connection or inspiration or nod to Miller's work was something that Snyder made clear when the movie was announced at the SDCC last summer, even having a passage read from it.  That was gracious for Snyder to do that upfront.  But he also made clear before the passage was read that the Batman in the sequel was not going to be Miller's.  It couldn't be because Man of Steel established a different premise, in fact many different ones.  The Man of Steel universe has its own mythology.  But if there was any doubt Snyder made it clear.

Perhaps Snyder could have also gone on and said "I'd also like to thank Clint Eastwood and the makers of Dirty Harry..." and "of course Buffy because as we all know thanks to many Whedonites everything always sources back to some episode or other of that... :-/ ...".  But he didn't.  He graciously gave the nod to Frank and that nod is almost year-old news now.

Fast forward to this First Photo and I thought it was a great one to introduce the sequel.  I did not think about Frank Miller nor Dirty Harry.  I thought about Man of Steel and more specifically the sequel to Man of Steel, and how Snyder has visually interpreted Batman in that sequel.

We knew it was an older and more experienced Batman and Affleck's casting was consistent with that.  So of course that was part of the context.  But I was also thinking about how Affleck looked in the suit, and all the casting announcements and the budding Justice League and Lex Luthor and so on, all of which and more will also be central to the context of the sequel and subsequent sequel.

How will THIS Batman, SNYDER'S Batman because he's directing and took the photo and tweeted it, look in the context of the 2016 sequel to Man of Steel?  Again, Frank Miller was the furthest thing from my mind.  The whole context of this First Photo arguably has as much to do with Dirty Harry as Frank Miller, and the Frank Miller nod was given last year.

So I got a little sarcastic after your "straight out of... Frank Miller" post.  Those "straight out of" words seemed dismissive of the great photo Snyder had just presented.  Some might literally think his photo was somehow ripped off from some comic panel that Frank Miller had done.  If you'd said "well, older and grizzled is consistent with the inspiration Snyder got from Miller's work," I might have said "sure, and Miller got his inspiration from Dirty Harry in case anyone didn't know."  The "straight out of" part, plus Miller, led to my two sarcasm emoticons, and you not being able to find a panel like this photo, let alone one Affleck stood for.

Exciting to think that SUPE2 will be in black and white. Like. . . "Zelig." {nm} second gary May 13, 09:45

Affleck as Superman in Hollywoodland you mean. Antibody May 13, 09:58

Troubling. :) second gary May 13, 10:03

I think this is the rght way to star building momentum............. Great pic {nm} gogreenytd May 13, 09:49

Yeah, I like it. The black & white, dusty look of the photo evokes an appropriately older, "grizzled" Batman. Grizzled is Good. :-) {nm} KalElFan May 13, 10:07

It's straight out of Frank Miller's Dark Knight Returns {nm} Antibody May 13, 10:11

Ben Affleck posed for FM's DKR art... who knew? :-/ (But feel free to post the panel it's from! And again :-/) {nm} KalElFan May 13, 10:20

LMGTFY Antibody May 13, 10:24

Quickly scrolled down all those images, couldn't find a panel like it, let alone Ben. :-) {nm} KalElFan May 13, 10:30

black & white, an appropriately older, "grizzled" Batman is clearly there. {nm} Antibody May 13, 10:33

Since you admitted that you hadn't thought of Frank Miller, then my job was done. {nm} Antibody May 13, 11:49

No, I knew about the FM connection long ago. My job was to mock your "straight out of" part, using Dirty Harry and the rest. :-) {nm} KalElFan May 13, 11:55

Frank Miller is mentioned by every comment section on every site publishing that photo today. {nm} Antibody May 13, 12:10

He's got the short, not-so-pointy ears of Frank Miller's Batman. Will that work on film like it did in print? {nm} CactusLand Jun 12, 05:15

That def isn't Nolan's Batman! Looking forward to it. {nm} thatpj May 13, 11:08

me like...but did Wayne Industries invent some new form of steroid? :) tealfan May 13, 11:41

Well done. {nm} wkelc May 13, 12:22
