The fact that she's half his age didn't help. It feels like a typical middle age actor ego trip.
No one cared about Smith flirting with Linda Fiorentino in Men In Black, but that wasn't the focus of the movie, as it appears to be here, and she was more age appropriate. If Smith was white, or Robbie was black, the two of them together would still be kinda gross.
The marketing went out of its way to imply that there would be no sex between them, just a flirtatious, familiar, bickering, mentor-mentee relationship, so I think the marketing department knew they had a potential hot potato.
Will Smith is to black guys what Ellen Degeneres is to lesbians, but I'm sure there are still many Americans, black and white, who weren't ready to see him scoring with Miss Teen USA.
