It's not always a good thing when drastic alterations are made to the last act of a film, especially when they've brought another director on board. Richard Donner's last minute "consultation" on Wolverine didn't give them the movie they wanted, or they wouldn't be scrambling to go back to the original film's creators.
For all we know, this could be a Supernova-like situation.
