The film is based on true story. After WWII, federal agencies and defense contractors hire numbers-savvy women to deal with the shortfall of male numbers crunchers. NASA does the same. Katherine Johnson, Mary Jackson, Dorothy Vaughan, Kathryn Peddrew, Sue Wilder, Eunice Smith and Barbara Holley, a group of unacknowledged African-American women help provide NASA with the raw computing power it needs to safely launch John Glenn and his fellow astronauts into space. The women deal with racism and the Jim Crow laws in Virginia. They become so valued that Glenn refuses to launch unless they sign off on calculations that give him confidence his craft will not turn into a fireball.
