A lot of the multiple formats are due to contractual or licensing restrictions especially in regards to IMAX.
i.e. IMAX use to restrict IMAX screens within a 50 mile radius of each other due to fear of cannibalizing. That obviously isn't the case anymore, but they are still very protective of how close an IMAX theatre can be to another.
