Given your posting history here I don't think you mean to sound demeaning to films starring minorities but in this case, you sort of do.

Is every film starring minorities released after summer going to be automaticially referred to as 'Oscar guilt/PC bait' this year? Isn't that over-generalization as well? What about in future? Is this only going to happen this year because of #OscarsSoWhite last year? I realize you are in the business and there is a certain cynicism involved with that but how do we move on from these characterizations if a release date causes this kind of scrutiny? Tupac is still a very powerful and popular persona to a lot of people. The fact that his murder is still not solved is interesting in a modern day true crime aspect which is also quite popular these days. (Making A Murderer, Serial etc...) Could it be possible that Open Road thinks they have something niche and artful and that's why it's coming out before Thanksgiving, before a lot of the big studio prestige stuff comes out? Maybe so they have a bit of a window and can make some money?  I'd personally like to think that a film starring minorities could open at any time of the year and it be just that - a film with an opening date. Please understand that this isn't a criticism - just an opening of hopefully thoughtful dialogue not predicated on aversion to anything and everything PC.

EW: Teaser Trailer for All Eyez on Me [TUPAC]; Nov. 11 release date Oleg Max Jun 16, 06:34

it'll do decent IMO, but don't expect Compton numbers with that release date. I REALLY hate that release date lobogotti Jun 16, 07:13

they might be shooting for oscar guilt {nm} Moviesnob Jun 16, 07:26

Tupac can appear at the Oscars to perform a new song via hologram. {nm} BSmurf Jun 16, 07:33

Oh yes, considering the way the release schedule is working out, it's gonna be a PC Award season. {nm} numbersix_99 Jun 16, 07:42

good call {nm} lobogotti Jun 16, 07:44

fair, but good distributors gunning for oscars do manipulate the academy to their benefit and guilt is traditionally a big motivator Moviesnob Jun 16, 09:28

The perpetuation of and insistence on marginalization matters too. But oh well, maybe not to everyone. {nm} CSBD Jun 16, 10:22

Having Tupac garner nominations and wins is a blow against marginalization. {nm} Moviesnob Jun 16, 10:25

it would seem that they have more confidence in this than Snowden although Snowden has a TIFF friendly release date so who knows? {nm} Moviesnob Jun 16, 10:29

i've heard 'Snowden' is more like 'Snoozeden' and there's no excitement for it. {nm} CSBD Jun 16, 10:31

but what if it's just a money move (which is fine)? that is within the realm of possibility. {nm} CSBD Jun 16, 10:30

sure, but it doesnt feel that way on the surface. November is a month full of award bait films and a rap biopic was a focus of the outrage Moviesnob Jun 16, 10:37

errrrrr, rather earlier this year {nm} Moviesnob Jun 16, 10:39

I just hope this doesn't mean that every film starring minorities that gets released in the latter part of the year isn't immediately termed CSBD Jun 16, 10:42

I understand where you are coming but every film with minorities angling for awards will be using guilt as an angle. Moviesnob Jun 16, 10:54

I think I understand what you're saying, but I do believe you're missing my point. {nm} CSBD Jun 16, 11:51

I think i understand you, but i see my opinion as pragmatic. {nm} Moviesnob Jun 16, 12:07

I get your pragmatism, but I still don't think every film starring minorities released in the latter part of the year should be lumped as CSBD Jun 16, 12:19

fair enough {nm} Moviesnob Jun 16, 12:23

Unquestionably the most enjoyable thread I have read this year {nm} Bleachigo Jun 16, 22:31

FYI, this is the first official piece of info from the movie and the first announced release date. {nm} Antibody Jun 16, 09:43

The price was low because it was in development hell for years and there's been little recent news to drive trading. {nm} Antibody Jun 16, 09:46

I would think off the success of Compton and all the casting announcements that traders would have lobogotti Jun 16, 09:49

It's a cast of nobodies. The film was rushed into production because Morgan Creek was about to lost the rights. {nm} Antibody Jun 16, 09:50

Compton was also a cast of unfamiliars. Notorious as well. {nm} lobogotti Jun 16, 09:52

Compton had Dre, Cube and Universal behind it. Unfortunately Tupac is dead. ABASS and AMACK are stars, but NOBIG "only" made $36M. {nm} Antibody Jun 16, 09:55

Mack wasn't recognizable in 2009. even 7 years ago that film opened to $20M with those lobogotti Jun 16, 10:09

we've known clarence since 2002 adrenalin112 Jun 16, 10:31

LOL! Papa Doc didn't even grab the mic on his final rap... he has no cred with me. {nm} lobogotti Jun 16, 10:36

Open Road's biggest live-action success is TGREY $51M. {nm} Antibody Jun 16, 09:57

one way of looking at it is they have only had awards success, so you continue what you do well. {nm} Moviesnob Jun 16, 10:11

Right, that's the same weekend as SPOTL so the release pattern may be limited first. {nm} Antibody Jun 16, 10:25

Today is also Tupac's birthday. {nm} CSBD Jun 16, 10:05
