The article says it'll loose 70+M which it still low-balling it... Feig original estimate of needing 500M is still probably accurate.

Posted by: Judgement_Death on Aug 10, 12:58 in response to notfabio's post THR: Claims GHOSTBUSTERS will lose 70 million, Sony...

"This loss calculation is way off," says the Sony rep. "With multiple revenue streams, including consumer products, gaming, location-based entertainment, continued international rollout, and huge third-party promotional partnerships that mitigated costs, the bottom line, even before co-financing, is not remotely close to that number."

1) Consumer products - The merchandise was put on clearance by automated systems at Target and ToysRUs a month before the movie came out. They will recoup next to nothing from merchandising (and don't quote that stupid Sony spin article about "exceeding expectations" which don't give any numbers at all)

2) The gaming company that did this Ghostbusters game already WENT OUT OF BUSINESS. They declared BANKRUPTCY 3 days after their game went on sale. Only sold 2,000 units.

3) Continued international rollout - There are only 6 territories left where it hasn't opened. Germany was supposed to be big, and it tanked there. The 71 territories it already is in is not generating much more - it is already tapped out overseas. It won't make the 225M, most likely less than 210M. Domestic will tap out around 127M and the remain 6 won't add to much.. I'll might not even break 200M

4) Third-party promotional partnerships? Progressive is really the only one I can remember seeing. They advertised the hell out of this movie on its own. And the marketing (e.g. putting a giant Stay Puft in London's Waterloo Station) was astronomical for this film. $150m is a "conservative" estimate for their marketing expense.

5) Sales of the previous Ghostbusters IP should NOT be included toward lowering the loss since most sales were probably nostalgia and protest sales not inspired sales.

This thing is still going to be between $100m-$150m loss for Sony when it's all said and done.

THR: Claims GHOSTBUSTERS will lose 70 million, Sony disputes the number even before co-financing. notfabio Aug 10, 08:36

Sony says they are focusing on the animated GHOSTBUSTERS feature film for 2019 and a new animated TV series in 2018. {nm} notfabio Aug 10, 08:37

Funny thing is that Sony does not dispute a loss, just that it isn't 70M {nm} reelreptile Aug 10, 08:39

I like that they claim revenue from a Madame Tussads exhibit is really going to make a significant dent. {nm} notfabio Aug 10, 08:41

If the rumored sales figures are true, it's quite possible wax museum money > new video game money {nm} MrZero Aug 10, 08:53

I've heard the game is absolute crap and had terrible sales, so it wouldn't take much. {nm} ~JPV~ Aug 10, 08:55

The game's creators had to shut down. That's pretty telling. {nm} UConnHusky Aug 10, 11:22

"The studio also notes that the number of people renting the 1984 film has soared over the summer." Jay_Beezy Aug 10, 10:33

The next installment in franchise film always increases library rev of previous installments. It's another reason why they are valuable. {nm} Moviesnob Aug 10, 10:54

I'm well aware of that. It just reads like they feel it makes the new one more successful. {nm} Jay_Beezy Aug 10, 13:09

revenue is revenue. the truth always is with these pieces is you can make an educated guess but no one really knows except sony & the real Moviesnob Aug 10, 13:34

HAHA told ya so, awhile ago. What they should focus on is an all-male reboot now, point blank. {nm} chosenone2oo5 Aug 10, 11:24
